Which type
Most of the disappointment with a new boiler comes from fitting the wrong type, not from fitting it badly. Here is the honest version of each.
Heats water on demand, no cylinder and no tank. Right for most one-bathroom houses and flats, and the least disruptive swap if you already have one. The limit is real though: a combi cannot serve two outlets properly at once, so a second shower will always disappoint somebody.
Stores hot water in an unvented cylinder, so several outlets can run together at mains pressure. The right answer for houses with two or more bathrooms. Costs more and needs cupboard space, but it is the difference between a shower that works and one that stutters.
The traditional setup with a cylinder and usually a tank in the loft. Often the sensible choice in older properties where the pipework and radiators suit it and a full conversion would mean tearing the house apart for limited gain.
The install
Bathrooms counted, radiators counted, mains flow rate measured at the tap. That is what sizes a boiler — not the size of the old one.

Drained down, disconnected and removed. Back boilers and tanks taken out too where the job calls for it.

By counting radiators and bathrooms and measuring the incoming mains flow rate, not by matching whatever is on the wall. Oversized boilers cycle on and off and wear out faster; undersized ones never keep up. A survey takes twenty minutes and settles it.
Often that is exactly right, and if so we will say so. But if the old one was the wrong choice for the house, fitting the same again repeats the mistake for another decade. Worth ten minutes of conversation.
In a house with two or more bathrooms in regular use, generally yes. A combi heats water as it flows, so two outlets at once split the flow between them. A system boiler and an unvented cylinder solves it properly.
Yes. They sit behind a fireplace and need the fire and surround dealt with as well as the boiler, so it is a bigger job than a straight swap, and we will be clear about that in the quote.
Yes, and most manufacturers now require one for the warranty. It catches the magnetic debris that circulates in every heating system and it is the single cheapest thing you can do to protect a new boiler.
Not always. A clean system with a filter may only need a chemical cleanse. A system full of black sludge with cold-bottomed radiators needs a proper flush. We test the water rather than assuming either way.
It depends on the manufacturer and the model, and in almost every case it depends on the installation being registered and the boiler being serviced annually. We register it for you and tell you what the terms actually require.
